Overview
From manga and anime to the live-action series on Netflix, ONE PIECE continues to captivate fans around the world. If you’re a true fan, there’s one destination in Japan you absolutely shouldn’t miss: Kumamoto.
Located on the island of Kyushu, Kumamoto is about a 100-minute flight from Tokyo. It’s also the hometown of ONE PIECE creator Eiichiro Oda.
In this guide, you’ll discover why Kumamoto is a dream destination for fans—and how to plan your own ONE PIECE pilgrimage.
ONE PIECE and Kumamoto: A Story of Recovery
In 2016, Kumamoto was struck by the devastating 2016 Kumamoto Earthquakes. Areas around Mount Aso suffered severe damage, and the iconic Kumamoto Castle was heavily damaged, impacting both the city and its people.
In response, Eiichiro Oda stepped in to support his hometown. Together with the Straw Hat Pirates, a unique reconstruction project was launched: life-sized bronze statues of the crew placed across Kumamoto Prefecture.
Today, all 10 Straw Hat members are scattered throughout the region, turning Kumamoto into a real-life treasure hunt for fans.

Where to Find the Straw Hat Pirate Statue
Here’s where you can meet each member of the crew:
- Luffy – In front of the Kumamoto Prefectural Government Office (Kumamoto City). You can also see Oda’s handprints inside the building on weekdays.
- Zoro – Located in Ozu Central Park.
- Nami – At Tawarayama Exchange Center “Moenosato” in Nishihara Village, on a hill overlooking the area.
- Usopp – Right outside Aso Station—you’ll spot him as soon as you arrive.
- Sanji – At Minami Terrace in Mashiki Town, within a park of public facilities.
- Chopper – At the entrance of Kumamoto City Zoological and Botanical Gardens (no ticket needed to see the statue).
- Robin – On the grounds of Kumamoto Earthquake Museum KIOKU, near preserved buildings of the former Tokai University Aso campus.
- Franky – Near Takamori Station. If you’re lucky, you can catch the Sunny Train for a perfect photo.
- Brook – At Mifune Town Fureai Square, next to a dinosaur-themed park.
- Jinbe – Near the scenic Nagabeta Seabed Road in Uto City, where the road appears and disappears with the tides.
How to Plan Your Visit
To visit all the statues, you’ll need at least 3 days. Public transportation alone makes it difficult, so renting a car is highly recommended.
I personally completed the journey in 2 nights and 3 days by car—but it left very little time for sightseeing.
Short on time? Focus on:
- Luffy statue
- Chopper statue
- The Mugiwara Store Kumamoto
Another idea: don’t rush to see everything. Leaving a few statues for your next trip gives you a great reason to come back.
Mugiwara Store Kumamoto

Near Kumamoto Station, you’ll find the official Mugiwara Store Kumamoto inside a shopping mall.
This is another must-visit spot for fans. You’ll be greeted by large figures of Luffy, Ace, and Sabo—the three brothers.
There are also exclusive items you can only buy here, making it a perfect place for souvenirs.
Extra Tips for ONE PIECE Fans
- Mini figure versions of each statue are sold near their locations—but not always right next to them, so plan ahead.
- Download the “IKOU” app to join a digital stamp rally (Japanese only).
- You can find Kumamoto-exclusive snacks featuring the Straw Hat crew—some even themed after individual characters.
- Ride the Sunny Train on the Minamiaso Railway. It runs only 1–2 times a day, so don’t miss it!
Final Thoughts
For ONE PIECE fans, Kumamoto isn’t just a destination—it’s an unforgettable adventure. Exploring the region while meeting each member of the Straw Hat Pirates creates a unique travel experience you won’t find anywhere else in the world.
